Hi folks. Here's my story. My main breaker switch keeps kicking off. I am not running several appliances at once and in my 10 years in the house this has not accured before. It is now happening every couple days and several times a day. It seems to happen only when the washer or dryer is running and has happened for sure when both are running. If my Main switch needs replaced do I call the power company and have them shut off my power? I have replaced other breakers before with no problem and have done other electrical work on my own with success. Electricity scares me though especially the 'big Main switch". Thanks for the advice. Glenn
Have an Electrician check for shorts, check the amount of total power you are using alot of (electric stoves, electric water heaters, pool pumps, hot tubs' pumps, electric dryers) as these use the most power. In my house I have about 20 15Amp breakers, but a 60 Amp main breaker. If you do the math, I cant be drawing even 10 amps on each one. Go here for more detailed help: http://forum.doityourself.com/index.php Scroll to Electrical and Electronics/ electrical. They know alot about electricity, this has been posted before also on thier forum, they'll help you out

Take out a PERMIT. Go outside pull of tag from utility company off of the meter hub, then yank the meter. This will kill all electricity to your home. Then go to panel and replace main breaker if possible. Main breaker may be tyed into panel permanently, which would mean you SHOULD call a qualified electrician. M8 Electric Solutions LLC
Sorry Harve, but pulling the meter is not a homeowner thing to do. The short circuit current available at a meter socket is enough to seriously injur someone. As far as the main breaker problem goes, it sounds like your cooking(overheating). This could be a bad connection at the main or a bad breaker itself. I would get a qualified/licensed electrician to put in a new breaker. If you only have a 60 amp service it's time for an upgrade. If you have a 100 amp service have the electrician check to see how much connected load you have. 100 may be enough.
Harve, just went to your company's web sight. I didn't realize you were an IBEW brother. I'm in Boston 103 by the way.
No Prblem Yanci, I was assuming that he had the brains to shut off the main disconnect at the panel first. But thanks for clearing that up for me. How is the work lookin' like out your way? I think Minneapolis has 400 on bench.
Real slow, but luckily I now work in a maintenance environment. Still union", a little less money. What the heck I'm retiring in 8 months anyway. Good luck out your way.

A note for future posters.
please state main breakers sizes and or service breakers sizes. there could be a problem with the neutral bushing on the transformer where the conection is partially or completely lost in where the replacement of the main breaker is a waste of money.
respectfully if i may always call the power company first and have them check there transformer out as this is usually free to the consumer and adds to either comfort of mind or the purse.
